COLCHESTER, VT…Green Mountain Power and Vermont Magazine are excited to announce a new partnership that will continue to honor the literary legacy of Ralph Nading Hill, Jr. with an annual writing award.
The Vermont Writer’s Prize, in honor of Ralph Nading Hill, Jr. is an annual competition that provides an opportunity for Vermont writers to showcase their talent. It is considered by Vermont writers to be one of the state’s premier literary prizes. Hill, a Vermont historian and writer who published numerous books and magazine articles on the subject of Vermont, was a long-time member of Green Mountain Power’s Board of Directors.
Mary Powell, President and CEO of Green Mountain Power said: “I’m delighted how this prize encourages Vermont writers to capture the spirit of Vermont. Partnering with Vermont Magazine is a wonderful way to move forward and inspire creative writing in Vermont.”
Phil Jordan, Editor of Vermont Magazine based in Arlington, Vermont, said “It is with pride and great pleasure that Vermont Magazine joins Green Mountain Power in sponsorship of the Vermont Writers’ Prize, in honor of Ralph Nading Hill, Jr. As it memorializes the literary contributions of its namesake, it is intended as well to inspire the kind of spirit that keeps Vermonters reading–and writing–and thereby building a better Vermont.”
The contest is open to all Vermont residents, including seasonal residents and students enrolled in Vermont colleges. Entrants may be amateur or professional writers.
Submissions must be essays, short stories or poems on the theme of “Vermont–Its People, the Place, Its History or Its Values.” Entries must be unpublished and less than 1, 500 words long.
The deadline for this year’s Vermont Writer’s Prize is November 1, 2013.
Send entries to Vermont Writer’s Prize, c/o Green Mountain Power, 163 Acorn Lane, Colchester, VT 05446. All submissions will be acknowledged with a postcard within 30 days after they have been received.
The winning entry will be selected by an independent panel of judges, and will be published in a special section of the March/April 2014 edition of Vermont Magazine. The author will receive a cash prize of $1, 500.
